EDEN PARK: Stadium Diverts Nearly 4 Tonnes of Waste in Single Event

Since the onset of the pandemic, the entire world has been restricted to attending online-only events with many of us missing the high energy of live sporting events, concerts, and music festivals. Due to New Zealand’s strict no-covid policy, in 2021, during the peak of the virus, Eden Park was able to host a sold-out concert to a crowd of 50,000 with Six60 (a popular NZ band) headlining.

The Challenge

Eden Park wanted to ensure that they gave fans a good event experience while being environmentally conscious in the process. In order to achieve this, Eden Park worked with BioPak packaging to guarantee that all food served on-site was sold in industrially compostable packaging. To quantify what is possible, as a result of 50,000 fans attending Six60’s Eden Park concert in April, the venue was able to divert almost 4 tonnes of waste from landfill and convert it into nutrient-rich compost.

The Solution

Every burger, chip, hotdog and pie bought was served in fully compostable packaging – alongside compostable cutlery. Eden Park’s ‘Only Compostable’ Policy has been implemented across all vendors and suppliers to help them further reduce the stadium’s waste. All these efforts will ultimately help them reach their goal of zero landfill waste by the end of 2023 (source).

Six60’s concert was a great success in returning back to pre-pandemic festivities while also implementing Eden Park’s sustainability efforts on a larger scale. “It was the largest concert New Zealand has seen since COVID-19 began. Eden Park uses only compostable single-use plates, cups and other service ware, and the packaging and food scraps collected from the Six60 concert amounted to nearly 4 tonnes of waste, that we were able to divert from landfill” explains Ben Sevensen, Eden Park’s Commercial Manager. “Making the switch was easy and the results speak for themselves.”
