FISHBOWL: The Bespoke Bagasse Bowl
Fishbowl designs a bespoke bowl

The Challenge

Fishbowl was started in 2016 by 3 university students looking to change the fast food scene. Fast-forward to today and there are 31 Fishbowl stores (with many spin-offs) dotted around NSW, QLD and VIC.

From humble beginnings with a 28-metre-square store in Bondi in 2016, the original values have remained the same: food that is fresh, delicious, healthy and ethically sourced. The beautiful food is complemented by design-driven spaces, curated music, bold personalities, cultural diversity with a focus on sustainable practices across the business.

When Fishbowl opened, they had already chosen our 24oz and 32oz bagasse bowls with a stickered PET lid as the most sustainable option for their food. Although these bowls achieved many of their sustainability goals, they wanted a bespoke, branded approach to match with their considered approach to interiors and food.

Results

BioPak and Fishbowl collaborated to create a bespoke bowl that presented their salads in the best possible way. Together we developed a custom bowl which has a more angled side in order to show salads optimally. The bowl is entirely embossed through the base which provides a unique-branded feel. We also created a custom pulp lid printed in black on the top which friction-fits to the base. In this way, they have created an entirely plastic-free take away packaging option with no clumsy stickers required.

Bagasse is a great option for sustainable packaging. It is entirely plastic-free and is a rapidly renewable resource with a low carbon footprint. It is a by-product of the sugar-refining industry. It is highly customisable, strong, rigid, moisture repellant and also fridge, freezer and microwave friendly. For these reasons, it is a great candidate for Fishbowl’s takeaway containers.

Composting in-store

Fishbowl also composts in-store and use Compost Connect to collect their organic waste and take it to the composters. Compost Connect connects businesses such as Fishbowl with compost partners who collect food waste and compostable packaging and transport it to the industrial composting facility. This ‘waste’ is then turned into nutrient-rich compost, which can then be used to grow plants again.
