Aquariums celebrate the natural wonders of the marine world and champion the protection of marine wildlife and our oceans – which are under threat as a result of plastic pollution.
But with many visitors eating at cafes in the facility, waste is inevitably created and the associated environmental impact needs to be considered and managed.
Single-use packaging is often required in foodservice settings as it offers a safe and convenient way to serve food. But all too often single-use packaging, along with food scraps and organic waste, ends up heading to landfill – or worse, the natural environment.
Sea Life Aquarium in Auckland knew they had to take a stand and improve their practices around waste management. In a bid to reduce negative environmental impacts, Sea Life has swapped conventional single-use packaging for carbon-neutral, compostable packaging and started using the BioPak compost service to divert packaging waste and food scraps from the landfill.
While recycling is a common waste management solution, it’s not always practical in foodservice environments where contamination can occur easily. It’s as simple as food residue left on used packaging that can contaminate the recycling stream and make it an impractical solution in hospitality environments. For Sea Life, recycling was a step in the right direction, but it wasn’t the whole solution.
BioPak’s compostable packaging paired with compost collection bins simplified the waste management process. By implementing the BioPak Compost Service, Sea Life staff and guests can divert food scraps and used packaging from landfill and create compost instead.
By adopting BioPak’s compostable foodservice products into their on-site food outlets, Sea Life saw significant changes to their contribution to landfill, which decreased by 13.93%. And instead of contribution 5 tonnes of waste per month, they now produce 1.5 tonnes of compostable waste since choosing to switch to BioPak products.
